Introduction:
This policy was drawn up by the staff in consultation with the Parents’ Association. It was approved by the Board of Management.

Rationale:
The need for this policy arose

  • from a request by the Parents’ Association for precise information regarding what category of DVDs / videos are shown and why.
  • To clarify for all staff what the viewing policy is
  • To effectively communicate this policy to all staff in particular temporary/part time/occasional teachers

Aims:
Both Parents and staff will be clear about what category of DVDs / videos may be shown.
Children will not be exposed to unsuitable material.

Content:
DVDs / videos are shown for one of the following purposes:

  • As a supplementary teaching resource for any curricular area but in particular RE, Gaeilge, SPHE, SESE, English. Those shown for specific topics will be usually but not exclusively specifically supplied as the resource for the specific topic. Occasionally the teacher will resource other suitable material to complement a specific topic.
  • As a lesson in its own right. Teacher will use a DVD/video as the main topic and base the lesson on it.
  • As a wet day entertainment tool to occupy the children when they are confined to the classroom during lunch break.

The following will apply:

  • DVDs/videos brought in by a child may notbe shown
  • Educational DVD/videos must be prioritised for showing
  • All new DVDs/videos must be passed by the Principal/Deputy Principal prior to viewing
  • Only those Entertainment videos with a “U” grading may be shown (normally a teacher guided lesson or during lunchtime). Under no circumstances may any other category be shown without express permission from the Principal/Deputy Principal.
  • “PG” is not suitable in a school setting
  • All DVDs / videos are kept in the resources store room and should be returned there
  • Unless being shown as part of a specific lesson and under guidance, no viewing session may last longer than 30 mins.

Success Criteria:
